I would say a feeling of basic love,

It is said as 'pity or mercy' in dictionary. Compassion as a feeling is at its crescendo, when you child is invalid, spastic or unable to do, what it normally would have done. Crippled persons, old age people not able to do their own minimum requirements attracts the attention of normal people resulting in pity and this is expressed as compassion.

from com- "together" + pati "to suffer"
