If you're spending (and able to spend) $65 per month on something that is completly unnecessary, wouldn't you that you're not poor?

Should people who are on welfare be allowed to have cable?

Of course not. They should live out their lives in complete and total misery, without one moment of entertainment. Don't let them buy presents for their kids on Christmas and birthdays, either!

Most of the poor people I know DON'T have cable TV, but if any did, I wouldn't begrudge them a little pleasure in a difficult life, and spending their money on cable, which can be educational and informative as well as entertaining, is better than spending it on cigarettes, or beer, or lottery tickets.

The purpose of welfare is to help people in need, not to punish people for being poor.

I think cable prices are ridiculous. Talk about ripping people off. The cable companies are writing the book on it. If people live in a remote area they should be able to have some access to news/weather/entertainment. In my area we are too far to receive a good TV signal and cable or satellite is the solution. To see people on Government subsistence with cable and high speed should not be tolerated. Perhaps if they learned to manage their money they wouldn't be in the trouble they are.

You use the word "poor" as if the poor are guilty of BEING poor-like it's a crime. You seem to think that the poor should be punished by not allowing them the freedom to spend their money on whatever they want to spend it on. Stereotyping is not a good quality in a person's character. I am poor due to the fact that our company dropped health coverage and I was injured soon after-defending the life of a girl about to be stabbed by her boyfriend. You figure out whether I am a "guilty" poor person.
