chances are that there was something else, such as aphids or other insects on your tomatoes first. ants aren't likely to eat tomatoes, but they are very likely to eat other insects that will eat tomatoes. i would make a mixture of non antibacterial dish liquid and water or buy an insecticidal soap from a plant nursery and spray the plants (it won't harm the plants or you, but it will kill any insect eating the tomatoes). once the ants' food source is gone the ants will go too. maybe there is enough summer left that you can still have a few tomatoes.

Try sprinkling red pepper on the plant or on the top of the dirt. Ants seem to hate it. To keep other pests off them, use soapy water in a spray bottle. This works great for rose bushes.

Spray with 10%sevin. Anything strong will make you sick if you eat the tomatoes. Wait a couple of days before you pick them.

probably too late but try mixing 1/2 tsp boric acid (roach powder) with 1/4 cup sugar, cotton balls soaked with water to coat lightly and put them in a glass jar with holes punched in the top. lay the jar on it's side in the garden.
ants should take it back to their nest. and be history.
