Wait. Intel should be coming out with the Core2 Duo mobile chips pretty soon. And that's what you should get. If you really want to play the waiting game, wait until Vista is released and just purchase a laptop with Vista preinstalled.

I work as an audio visual technician. In terms of buying crap, lets just say that the best way to buy a computer is to determine exactly what you need it for. If you're using it for video production in any way, then you will need a very powerful computer with the best video hardware and software. On the other hand, if you are in business and you only need it for presentaton purposes, then you don't need alot of bells and whistles. Do shop around because there is much information that needs to be learned before anything is done. Buy a computer just like any other high end purchase. By the way, if you are buying this machine for business or professional use, then you will need to put yourself on a timetable of approximately three years between each repurchase because technology changes so often. You will find that you can upgrade but even that will fall short and you'll come to the conclusion that with all of the upgrades you probably could have bought yourself a new machine. There is no such thing as a good time to buy something that is technology related. No matter when you make your purchase you will need to upgrade or repurchase at some point. If you do need a computer for video production try and steer clear of Sony. The only reason I say this is because you will spend a lot of time upgrading the software and downloading patches because Sony doen't want you to use anyone else's software.

Toshiba makes the best. (IBM used to, but they sold that company, and now it's crap).
I recommend that you look at different models. This is a personal preference choice. You might want SMALL and Lightweight. You might love LARGE screen or widescreen. You might want bells and whistles, or you might want simple.
But don't look on-line, until you have been to a store to see for yourself. I recommend that you scope out Costco for the best price, but look at other stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. Even Wal-mart has a couple of models.
But be sure to ask about their RETURN policy. Many computers, regardless of brand, arrive BROKEN. You don't need your money tied up in some repair shop for months. Costco, for instance, accepts returns and provides FULL refunds without even asking any questions. (so if you say it's dead, or say that it still works and you just don't like it, they start counting out your money). Many of those other stores charge a restocking fee... or want to send it out to get repaired.

Wait until you're sure there's something you really like and spend as much money as possible to be sure you get the best and it won't be obselete in fifteen minutes.
You're right - it is a lot of money and you don't want crap.

i recommend you buying alien ware laptops ... they are real hard core . you might not need it if it's not for gaming . but the performance is real good . high quality graphics . get a computer with 3 GHz AMD 3000+ , at least 512 ram , 256 /512 graphics memory , audigy sound blaster platinum card , 120 gb hard disk storage, this should give you a real high end computer !!!

better computers come out almost every day sort of speak.. just get somehing that will suit ur needs. if u don't work with really complex programs like animation and graphics, then it doesn't matter if u buy one now. it's all about what you want to use it for.

I wanna get a nice laptop too. But as you know, technology is constantly improving & there's no limit... so even if you get a laptop today, there'll always be a better one coming up. Just get one that is good presently, and don't regret your choice :)
