Dear Poetry Enthusiast,

This question is not so simple becasue of the general scope it addresses. There are "great" poets from all countries, cultures, languages and periods in history.

Also, what may have once been considered great can perhaps be considered otherwise today. But I will do my best to answer your question and provide you with some links so that you can do some further reading and research. It is such a vast topic and there are so many great poets that it is necessary to put some effort into educationd oneself through study and reflection.

I think any great list of poets must include the following not only because of what they wrote but because of how they influenced poetry and because of the historical value they have. There are other reasons but I will be brief here.

1.) Homer
2.) Pushkin
3.) Milton
4.) Shakespeare
5.)Goethe
6.) Tennyson
7.) Yeats
8.) Thomas (Dylan)
9.) Auden
10.) Frost
11.) Ginsberg
12.) Bukowski
13.) Dylon (Bob)
14.) Morrison (Jim)
15.) Dante
16.) Chaucer
17.) Whitman
18.) Plath
19.) Sophocles
20.) Sappho

And there are so many more. Why are they great? Well you need to read poetry and see for yourself. It is personal and everyone can write if they like to.

Here is a great poem that I love by Charles Bukowski. Why is it great? Well, maybe it speaks to our soul in a way that ordinary language can't.

Bluebird

by Charles Bukowski
1920-1994

there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I'm not going
to let anybody see
you.
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he's
in there.

there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody's asleep.
I say, I know that you're there,
so don't be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he's singing a little
in there, I haven't quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it's nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don't
weep, do
you?

Best Wishes and enjoy poetry, it is for everyone,

Which language/culture? Otherwise it's pretty wide open. In English, start with Shakespeare's sonnets.
