My dad was required by FEMA to complete a test for some crisis management for work. He did and submitted the information. They sent him his certificate in the mail but some ****** at FEMA put his entire name along with his social security number on the outside of the envelope for everyone to see. I was outraged as was my father. I thought he should call FEMA or even the police. Any postal worker could have written that down. What should we do? My father feels that its too late.

Nothing has happened to your father due to the contributory negligence by the FEMA officials' lack of care and caution. In case you directly suffer any loss you have to connect the loss with the negligence to claim compensation by filing a civil suit in a court of law.

Cant really do a thing. And actually all you can do is get an apology out of FEMA for now. You can only sue them if there something comes out of someone else knowing his social security number. You have to prove harm, and so far no harm has come from it.

Keep in mind as soon as he sent the forms orginally into FEMA, thousands of people knew his social security number. Every time he files taxes a ton of people see his social security number. So, right now, more federal employees saw his social security number who shouldn't have. Its definately wrong, but doesn't appear much can be done.

I would certainly contact FEMA and ask them what they could have possibly been thinking. Labels are printed via automation and picks up the fields that are identified by the user. FEMA needs to fix this, it should be a pretty easy fix. The damage, if any, has already been done in your dad's case, but you can prevent someone else from the possibility of Identity theft.

your father needs to call the company and talk with a supervisor. Not only is that very unprofessional, but at the same time dangerous. There are so many people dealing identity theft. If someone gets a hold of your social security number that can pretty much do anything. Tell your father to call and complain!

He needs to contact FEMA, and let them know of the mistake. Next, he needs to call or write all three credit bureaus. the credit bureaus will flag his account so that if someone applies for credit in his name, they will call him directly to verify that it is him trying to get credit.

It's never too late to do this. If he doesn't do it, he's just crazy. Once he calls the credit bureaus, they can tell him if there's been any recent activity on file for him. He can call the police dept., to see if there's anything that he should do, but I think they will probably say there's nothing that they can do. It's just not a crime yet, only someone being careless. But please MAKE him call the credit bureaus b/c the typical thing one does in identity theft if obtain credit.

Good Luck... he needs to take all necessary precautions.

He should advise FEMA and the police.

It is too late but hopefully it can be monitored in this age of identity theft it was a big boo boo on the part of FEMA.

Hope this hasn't happened to others as well.

This is tough.
The thing as far as i gather you did not suffer actual damage. Being outraged does not count.
So there is no grounds for a lawsuit.
What you can do is complaint to Fema about their policies.

Not the end of the world. You don't need to have kittens over this. Postal employees don't need your money. Do you have any idea how much they make? The lady that sweeps the floor makes more than you and me combined.
