In the UK we call this type of experience "Brackston Hicks" contractions. It sounds to me as though you may be having these. They are practice contractions which start to prepare your cervix for the delivery of your baby.

You will know when you are in proper labour. I would describe this as follows: - light twinges which last for a few second, building up to what feels like someone squeezing you inside at the top of your vagina. The later contractions come more frequently and take your breath away.

When I had my first child my contractions started two days before she was born. I had a slow, uncoordinated labour. This is where the contracts do not work with the cervix, and the cervix dilates on its own.

Most midwives do not carry out internal examinations these days. They are seen as being intrusive and can lead to infection. Your midwife will examine you internally when she needs to.

If your pain increases and you feel worried - go to the maternity unit at your hospital. Call them before and tell them you need them to examine you.

Good luck with your baby.

Ok your DR. probly didn't want to start your labor. and if he checks you it very easly could. True Labor pains (most of the time)start in your lower back and move around to your abdomen.and then sometimes down to your vigina. But Yes you probly are having some contractions. With my 4 kid I had contractions for about 3 weeks. but non painfull till the day I had her.If it is a Very sharp pain and any blood at all go to the hospital.Dont Freek out if there is (sorry 4 this)snotty bloody stuff, that is your Mucus plug. But any pain that makes you feel week or like pushing or hurts to the point its hard to breath you must go to the ER right away!I hope this helps
Good Luck and Best wishes

i know what you mean when you say the pain goes straight to your vagina. i also had it and it is probably the baby squashing a nerve. labour pains do not feel like that. you will know for sure when you are in labour. but you should get any pain checked out by a doctor.
good luck

Hmmm, well if its shooting pains its probably your babies head hitting your cervix. That will bring the hairs up on the back of your neck! Labor doesnt feel like sharp pains. It starts like really bad cramps and just gets stronger, gl!

Some "false labour" like this is quite normal. It'll start for real any day now so just relax and stay at home and you'll do great when the time comes.

I would go back to the doctors and let them know this. Even if you are not 39 weeks yet you still could having contractions and
deliver prematurely. Doc to your doc.

go to the hospital and have them check you out. you probably aren't ready to eliver yet, and they will probably send you home, but THIS time...ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!!!

you never should have left the dr office unsure of what was happening.

if they send you home, then ask them why and what you should be looking for to come back.

take care,.
