a LAN and INTRANET aren't all that different. The main difference is the size of the network. A true LAN is centeralized into one building a Local Area Network. Where a INTRANET is spread over an area of multiple buildings typically. Both are confined to only being accessable by the owner of the network and those ppl who they deem are allowed. The other standard definitions that you might be looking for are this. A LAN is a network of computers sharing resources amongst a closed circuit. An INTRANET is a network resource (almost internet like with websites) amongst a LAN network. Take your pick.

A LAN is typically in just one building, but an Intranet could be a company network that is accessible from all their offices for example in Sydney, London, New York and Montreal.

Lan is local area, and can be completely disconnected from the internet. The intranet is a WAN (wide area network). And the internet is just the mother of all WANs... connecting the computers, LANs and WANs.
