Squeeze out excess air and press the nozzle into the lump of over-expelled toothpaste, then, squeeze the compressed sides of the tube together, thus creating more space within the tube, which will be filled with the excess paste.
I'm afraid the chances of salvaging all the toothpaste is low, but this way you'll save some...

I did this once as a practical joke. I mixed elmer's glue with blue food coloring and mint flavoring. Then I got a meat injection needle that you use to baste turkeys etc with. Suck up the toothpaste (or in my case glue paste), then cut a small corner off the other end on the tube, insert the needle and put the paste back in. My cousin finished the whole tube and never noticed he was brushing with elmer's glue.

Of course you can...and I suspect this funny character knows it too...just wants to see how many of us fools will take the time to respond. So here goes...squeeze (again) until the paste is right up at the brim, put the nozzle right over the excess and let go of your squeeze hold...the paste will be sucked right back up into the tube!

sorry the tubes are designed one-way- squeeze out. you can put the excess toothpaste in a air tight container or even a zip lock bag and use it.

Cut the tube with a knife, scrape the excess paste back in, then tape up the tube again!

I would try cutting a small hole on the end of the tube, place the end of the tube in your mouth and sucking it back in. Once it's all back in the tube, cap it tightly.

the only way i can think of is to put it in a basting syringe and insert the needle part inside the tube through the nozzle

You dont! You need to let the excess dry and then cut it up like powder and sniff it. I've done it, what a friggin rush.
