I disagree with her, pregnant women shouldn't be breathing in any strong chemical. I personally would have waited. That being said, it was only five minutes, so I am sure you'll be fine.

What I did was get a list of things to stay away from in my first pregnancy and I kept it with me so I could remember what was harmful and then whenever I was around something (like at the hairdressers) I would always ask to look at what they were using.
I was in High School when I was pregnant with my first and was in Art Class for a long time, until I realized I was pregnant. The baby was fine though, and we used a lot of stuff in that room I should not of been around.

Remember that just because something has a strong odor, no matter how bad the smell, that doesn't make it automatically a harmful fume. Generally, hairdressers are pretty well trained in knowing what is harmful and what isn't.

I am not a doctor but i think that if you only endured the strong smell for 5 minutes it should not affect your unborn child. If you are worried about the side affects that it may have consult your doctor for peace of mind.
Wishing you the best health for you and your bubby.
