The heat caused by lightning causes the air around it to expand faster than the speed of sound. The thunder you hear is the gas breaking the sound barrier (sonic boom). The reason it rumbles a long time is because it bounces off of objects before it gets to you. If a lightning strike is close enough, you will hear the *crack*.

from the clouds but because of the "ground" and the forces of the movement of air and sound it makes!

the earth is a massive depository of charged matter and electrons or a electrical "ground".

under certain weather conditions the atmosphere develops a net charge (due to changes in water vapor or air movements) and when itn reaches a certain level and comes near enough to the "ground" it makes a "spark" . the spark travels thru the air and consumes all the oyygen. the refilling of that empty space by the sky cause a big noise called 'thunder".

just like your static electricty "jumps" and strikes your finger from a door nob and makes a little thunder sound..so electrons from the sky "jump" to the ground and lose their charged state while causing a big thunder!.

When there is lightning, the air around the bolt heats up and moves away very fast. The thunder is the air rushing back in to fill the void.

Thunder is the sound of the atmosphere collapsing into the void created by the lightning bolt once it has disappeared. This is very similar to a sonic boom.

actually it is from the sonic boom created by lightning. It moves as you know at the speed of light plus it is so hot that when is discharges it split the air much like a jet airplane but obviously more intense.

listen, what travels faster, light or sound? light. so lightening is first. which is nothing but static electricity on a mega scale, the comes the slower thunder.
