before jimmi hendrix everyone played the electric guitar as if it were an amplified accoustic. top players practised bends, chords, improvised riffs, chokes, right-hand muting - all the stuff you could do on a jazz / folk cello guitar. nobody ever noticed that there were things an electric instrument could do that were just nothing like what you could do with an open body instrument.

hendrix brought in wah-wah, pedals, fuzz, feedback, infinite sustain, phase distortion, chorus. not just hendrix, but mainly hendrix.

hendrix didn't just play the guitar, he invented it.

The best guitarist in the world is Richard Thompson. Everyone's always ranting and raving about the British blues-men: Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Peter Green , Mick Taylor, etc, etc, but Thompson can play absolutely every style going. The deftness of his finger-picking is simply staggering - I'd like to have seen Hendrix having a go at some of that - and yet he can pull off an electric solo that would scare the living daylights out you. No one else sounds quite like him, and no one else bends or hammers a note quite as beautifully as Richard Thompson. And that's saying nothing of his songwriting abilities...

G'day Lalala,

Thank you for your question.

Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all time for mine.

Lauded by music fans and critics alike, Hendrix is considered by many to be the most influential and talented electric guitarist in rock music history. As a rock guitarist, Hendrix exploited and integrated the sonic tools of feedback and distortion into his music to an extent that previous pioneers (such as The Kinks' Dave Davies, The Yardbirds' Jeff Beck and The Who's Pete Townshend) never achieved.

Hendrix sought to combine what he called "earth", a blues, jazz, or funk driven rhythm accompaniment, with "space", the high-pitched psychedelic sounds created by his guitar improvisations. He also integrated instruments rarely used in rock, such as the harpsichord, recorder, and glockenspiel. As a record producer, Hendrix was also an innovator in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas: he was notably one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during the recording process.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Hendrix number one on their list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time".

I have enclosed more resources for your information.

Regards

Paul Gilbert.
There is nothing he cannot do the instrument.
And at a level that far exceeds supposed masters of their particular fields.
He has the ability to make you laugh, make you cry, make you FEEL.
And is utterly technically proficient at the same time.
Superb.

...and if anyone says Hendrix - so help me..................

Oh my, what's with the Slash worship here - are any of actually players, cause come on?!?! Slash???!!??!! The guy can't play.

Neil Young. He plays the guitar like no one else. Just listen to the song Pocahontas for a soft example, or Hurricane for a hard example. No matter what end of the spectrum he's playing at, it is an extension of his soul.

Jimmy Page. He makes my soul want to cry the way he plays the blues. Powerful.
