2 plants that are great for this are "Mother-in-Laws tongue"--a dark green, tall-spiked leaf plant, very stiff rigid leaves---and spider plants.
Both have been shown to be very effective at getting certain pollutants out of the air in houses.

Spider plants are highly effective at removing carbon monoxide. There's an interesting research paper about it and other plants that clean the air posted by the University of Florida Extension office: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/HE356.

Spider plants are good air cleaners. You could always check with your local plant store and see what they have, and see what is good for your area. They are a hanging plant, I don't know if that is the one you were thinking of.

All plants emit CO2 at night and I wonder how clean the air can be with them -- unless you move the pots outside when it is getting dark.

Spider plants work well. They absorb the toxic stuff in rooms to a great extent.
