Dust, in the His Dark Materials trilogy, is the constituent stuff of the universe. It is what matter is made of, and since in Phillip Pullman's cosmology matter is animate, dust is drawn to intelligence. That is, it's interested in anything that shows purpose, and humans and other sentient beings show purpose.

Everything has a purpose even something as insignificant as dust. I believe that it is there to harass our allergies because of sin!

Dust is there to indicate that the object is not used/ clean for a long time. A clever way to stop us from not cleaning.

dust isn't actually dirt, not the majority anyway. dust is mainly composed of dead skin cells that fall of four bodies everytime we move around. we need to shed these dead skin cells otherwise our skin will get really dry. anyways, they get renewed all the time.

I don't know if it has a _purpose_... it rather _exists_. I mean, I know why it appears (some is made of very light particles of dirt; from pollen, from particles that have rubbed away from things, including blankets and wooden furniture... particles that go out of cars, etc., etc.), but what is the necessity of it... Dunno.
