Imagine you're running down the pitch towards the end where you want to score. You're free to take a pass from a team mate, but you've got to make sure that there's a guy from the opposition between you and the goalkeeper before your team mate can kick the ball to you.

Since my boyfriend explained it to me I've become addicted to the sport. It makes so much more sense now. If they didn't have the offside rule all you'd have to do to score would be to keep someone next to the goal and just feed him passes whilst the opposition tries to stop you and you beat the lonely goalkeeper. This way it mixes it up a bit, and makes it harder and more interesting because there's more skill needed. Hope this helps you fall in love with the game like I have done.

You are off-side when you are more advanced to the back-line of your opponent's area than the ball, with following exceptions:
1. At least 2 opponent's players (including Goalkeeper) are more advanced, or as advanced as, you to their back-line.
2. You are in your area.
3. You are not taking advantage of your position (it means you are letting the ball away; but this exception is still debatable).
4. The ball is being passed by opponent's player (it is debatable: how can you decide whether a defensive player deliberately pass the ball or just block the ball?).

However, decisions about off-side are still debatable, a little bit subjective (depend on referee's point of view), and volatile (change from time to time, depending on FIFA's attempts to make soccer more attacking and scores more goals).

Offside is a Law in football (soccer) which effectively limits how far forward attacking players may be when involved in play. Simply put, a player cannot gain an advantage by waiting for the ball with only the goalkeeper or last defender between him and the goal.

When a player from team A Is behind the last Player(expect the goalkeeper) of team B when the ball is played to him then it's offside. It's not offside a player is that same situation, but the Ball is not played to him,but to a another player, then it's passive offside. Also, when a player was in a offside position;but wasn't playing a part in that action,he can play a part in other action. The referee decides when it's a another action. Also,it's not offside when a player is in offside, but the opposing last player is in team A half, and it's not offside when you are behind the player with the ball.

If a player on your team passes you the ball, and there is less than 2 opposing players between you and your opponents goal, at that split second the pass is played, then you are offside.

Usually you only need to make sure that one opposing player is nearer his own goal than you are when the pass is played, because the opposing goalkeeper counts as the second player.

If you are level with the last player (not counting the goalkeeper) when the pass is played you are not offside.

Also you need to be in your opponents half when the pass is played to qualify for offside.

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.
A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the field of play; or
• he is level with the second last opponent; or
• he is level with the last two opponents.
