If your online friend is somebody you met in chat and they've shown interest in talking to you one on one, then ask if you can add them to your yahoo messenger. AFTER you've done that, go and add them.

Go to a chat room. Talk to many people and make friends. Then you can add them to your messenger list. That is the way to get an online friend on Yahoo! Messenger,.

if they have already have a yahoo id send them an invite thru messenger...they will have to install messenger.

first install yahoo messenger.
then you will know everything.
