Many people told me I was wrong for being upset over losing my valuables as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Why is it OK for everyone else 2 be upset but not me? Should I be within reason 2 be hurt over losing my valuables? As a result of me losing my valuables, I had 2 finance a way 2 replace it, which is causing me debt. Like my computer. My computer was stolen, & I had 2 finance another one. Now, I'm in debt. I'm struggling financially over that. Plus, my TV & other important things. I lost so much it really hurts me. I've been depressed for many months. Please tell me if it's normal for me 2 be depressed, worried, & upset over my losses over Hurricane Katrina. Thanks.

You aren't upset over losing your things. You're upset over the lost work it took to get them, and the work you'll have to do to get your life going again. Things only have value when there are thoughts, memories or effort attached to them.

So yeah, it's normal. The only way to pull yourself out of that hole, short of medication, is to realize that you'd be working anyway. Try to enjoy what you do, even though it might not be exactly what you wish it was. It never is, but you can enjoy what you have just the same :)

I would be pretty damned upset if I lost all of my stuff. I like my material things, that's why I have them. I don't know if it's "right" or logical, because you can replace them, but it's probably normal. Those were the things that made your life the way it was before, and now you don't have those things. That's a big change for anyone to go through. Plus, it's causing you a lot of extra stress now that you don't need, so it would certainly be just easier had it not had to happen in the first place, so I think that's a pretty good/normal reason to feel upset and stressed and worried and maybe a little depressed.

If you are depressed, then it's probably because of all this new stress and not specifically because you lost those material things. You should definitely talk to a therapist about it though, because the depression won't just go away by itself. Even if you replace those material things, the depression won't disappear when they reappear. You've got to take care of yourself, and it sounds like you're already doing that by getting on your feet again. So, you should definitely see a professional about helping you out with your depression so you can be able to recover 100%.

You most certainly are not wrong for being upset over losing your things. I think that American society, as a general rule, places WAY too much emphasis on material things, especially frivolous things. People watch MTV cribs or even HGTV and feel bad when they can't afford a 10 million dollar house in Santa Barbara.

It is perfectly normal for you to be upset over losing your things, anyone would feel the same way. Whoever has told you that you were "matrialistic" for missing your stuff has obviously NEVER been in your shoes. Do not mapy attention to them.

Did you file any type of claim with your insurance or even FEMA? I live in South Florida and I have seen some people here file claims for what seemed to be very minor things, even the replacing of luxury items (some of which had nothing to do with the Hurricanes...sad but true).

You should never let material goods determine your level of hapiness, but you have every right to feel depressed over this. Talking to a counselor might help as well, if it persists.

I do value some material things, but not nearly as much as I value immaterial things such as life, love, true friends, my pets, health, etc... Iam sorry for your loss, but try to put it into perspective and know what you could have lost and be thankful for what you still have. That will make it easier to cope with the losses that you have suffered. best of luck to you!

I don't blame you at all. People need to realize you worked hard for what you had, and it isn't fair to lose property to thieves. I would be very mad.
