Is there any (preferably free) software available that would let me create a map showing which countries I have visited?

ArcExplorer is a lightweight GIS data viewer developed by ESRI. This freely available software offers an easy way to perform a variety of basic GIS functions, including display, query, and data retrieval applications. It can be used on its own with local data sets or as a client to Internet data and map servers.

You could use something expensive like Autocad. I use it at work. There are probably downloadable maps of the world available in that format.

Try Google Earth, go to Google then under the e in Google look at the word under it -more>- click more, there you will see Google Earth.
