So I took 3 home pregnancy tests two days ago and they all said positive. But because I have been having serious continuous cramping and just moved to the area with no set gyno, I went to the ER to get full testing. I got a urine test, blood test, and ultra sound. At the end of 5 hours, the nurse casually said you have cysts (sp?) on your ovaries so that may be the cramping. Then they said they can't see anything in the ultrasound and so it may be just a really really early pregnancy or something may be going on outside the uterus. They told me come back in in 2 days to take more blood tests to compare with the last blood test to see if anything is going on. I am 23 and really have no idea what any of this means.

Basically I asked her if I was pregnant or not b/c her answers were not clear, and she said "there is no yes or no answer even though your tests showed up positive." Can someone please help me understand this?

approx. 10% of all pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion, meaning that your body's rejecting the pregnancy because all is not right. this COULD be what you're experiencing. you would have positive results until your body goes through the expelling process, which would include having a really rough "period" with lots of cramping. you also may be experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, one that occurs outside the uterus, usually happening in the fallopian tubes. ironically i was 23 myself when this type of thing occurred with me. i had ovarian cysts as well during this process. ( in the years since i have heard of many similar experiences from other women) hang in there, time will tell what is going on. get with a good gyno and let him/her run with what you've got going on. and most of all, best wishes toward you!!

I am not a family doctor.. but it sounds serious. My girlfriend had a pregnancy that was outside the uterus. It was very painful, and caused cramping she ended up needed surgery. This could be what is happening to you. Cysts as I understand are abnormal growths that show up on your ovaries. This happens allot, and thank god you found out now before any damage happened before it ruined your chances at ever having a normal pregnancy.

I really think at this point you need a family doctor to ask these types of questions too. You didn't say where you lived.. I look for everything on the web for information. I love in Ontario so I am attaching links I found that might be useful.

If you don't find what you are looking for please email me via yahoo 360... and I would be happy to help you again.

You may be pregnant and still have ovarian cysts. But the correct answer is, "find an ob/gyn".

You could have what's called a "luteal cyst" which is basically the leftover corpus luteum from the egg your ovary released to start the pregnancy. Usually it just gets reabsorbed but the pregnancy hormones in your system can make it stick around and grow larger.

It's not a danger to you or the potential baby, but if they cause too much discomfort they can be removed by laprascope.

It may just be a little to early for the ultrasound, but if the tests are showing up positive, thats probably 99% sure that you are. I wouldn't panic at this stage and wait another couple weeks to see if your period comes. Act as if you are pregnant(which you prob are), meaning, stay off soft cheeses (brie/blue vein etc) no alcohol, no smoking etc. Then try the test again, the test is rarely positive if you are not pregnant. The tests pick up the hormones that are present when you are pregnant, they are the only hormones it looks for. So as the box says, it's 99.9% sure.

Go to a gynocologist. Ask around and find one. They are better equiped than the ER. They'll send you for testing and give you a straight answer.
