Most three year olds do NOT have the dexterity to play a banjo. (Maybe your kid is special) I would get him an inexpensive keyboard which can produce various sounds and a music book which uses color coding instead of notes on a scale, which correspond to colors you place on the keyboard.
Spend a bit of time showing him how the colors work.
Teach him some simple songs he is familiar with and see if he maintains an interest in music.
Better that than fustrating him.
When he turns five or six his fingers will have better dexterity for a stringed instrrument.

Of course you should encourage him, most of the talented kids were discovered when they were between 3-4 years old, how knows, maybe you will be very proud on him in a couple of years...

Yes, if he has an interest in anything at the age of three, you should support him in any way you can. If he learns a musical instrument while he's young, he will be great when he gets older. Children at that age are like sponges; they won't stay that way through the teen years.

YOU NEED TO ASK????
Certainly encourage, do all you can to promote this,,,AT HIS PACE.
He may never be a prodigy, but assume for a moment how short the attention span of a child is, and how fortunate when one finds joy in anything they can.
His interests, his comfort, his abilities, should all be allowed, and nurtured. You need not PUSH, or even make a HUGE deal of it, but certainly don't deny it or disregard it, as long as he ISN'T.

Are you sure that's all he wants and all he is interested in? I didn't think a 3 year old would know what a banjo is.

By all means encourage him.Your son may be a musical genius who is still a child. But just wait until he is in his teens and adult years. Then you will know for sure. And then you will really be proud of him and yourself. Tiger Woods' parents,Serena & Venus Williams' parents encouraged them when they were small children, and look at them today!!Parents are meant to encourage their children without hesitation.

If you don't know what to do with your own kid you shouldn't even have one. But if the kid likes banjos and you can buy one then why in the world wouldn't you? Don't have any more kids.
