During the 1980s there was a wave of "backward masking" and I remember some friends of mine going through the whole debate on whether this song was in fact about satan worship and such. I didn't really get into the whole debate being I was a teen and all. Their mother really seemed to be up in arms about it. As far as tunes go, its a pretty good song.

Hotel California was the Eagles' fifth album of original material and became a major commercial hit; since its release in late 1976, it has sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone, and is their best-selling album of original material.

Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), addiction to drugs, death, the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the "American Dream".

The information is from wikipedia. I personally like the song:D
