John Logie Baird is credited with inventing television. However, his version was very different to the television we use today. It used a complicated analogue mechanism. An American farm boy (Farnsworth?) invented the cathode ray tube which is the main component of a traditional television set (although it is now being replaced by plasma flatscreens). It was the BBCs decision to broadcast purely for Marconi (cathode ray) 401 line sets rather than Baird's 30 line mechanical sets that lead to his bankrupcy. The device used in the Marconi sets was developed by a Russian, Vladimir Zworykin.

There is no definite answer for this but it is believed it was by these two people who were not related to each other and who work on tv at the same time at different place: Vladimir Kosma Zworykin, a Russian-born American inventor working for Westinghouse, and Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a privately backed farm boy from the state of Utah.
