I have two copies of windows XP home edition on my computer, one that was installed when we bought it, and the other is a retail version. The one that was already installed is the one that we used--and it seems to have crashed. It keeps going through the restart procedure, and when I've gone through the system recovery mode I get the message UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME . That copy is installed on the C: drive. The copy I'm using now (the retail copy) is on the D: drive, and when I go to My Computer and click on the C: drive, it says that the C: drive isn't formatted. If I format the drive, will I be able to recover some of the files from the XP that is down? Is there any way to recover those files? Please offer your comments/advice. Thanks.

The D: drive is a separate, much smaller hard drive.

And as another wonderful symptom, my computer is restarting itself about every five minutes.

When we first got the computer, my dad wanted to install MS Office software, but bought XP home edition instead...

Well that's windows for you... by formatting you'll loose your data.. so format only if you do not have any important data then don't... you'll have to use some third party recovery tools like "Get back" or something.. once you have all the files that you need... then format the C drive

I think it's a very complex situation you are in. I assume that you have 2 HD now and running two different OS. The error message comes out because you have two OS and only one can be used. First if its a separate HD physically, then all you need to do is remove the one that have home edition from the motherboard and try booting the com by using the XP edition. Then if possible, copy whatever data you need and create a backup. Then put back your home edition and format the XP edition. At any one time, there could not be 2 windows working on the same computer. By formating the XP HD you will not see the error message anymore and you will be able to accedd the HD. All the best cheers,

No, if you format it, all data on that partition will be lost.

So you had this setup as a dual-boot system the whole time? May I ask why you would bother running two copies of XP Home? It seems like a waste to have purchased the Home Edition retail.. Perhaps your D: drive is actually a seperate hard drive altoghther...
