Although Lassie is the best known, she is a fictional hero played by canine actors. I would have to nominate Laika, the forgotten little dog that became the first hero and the first victim of man's venture into space. So to me she symbolises the ultimate sacrifice of dog for man, and the way humans often repay dogs for their unconditional love and fidelity (by using them and ultimately killing them, like the escimoes kill their sled dogs when they can't work any more...). This is how mankind treat "man's best friend" and Laika is a powerful example...For every revered Lassie, I am afraid there are many, many unsung Laikas.

Okay, I understand why you say the space dog, but I would have to go with Lassie or Old Yeller. Yep, definately.
