Being that earwax is oil-based, no type of oil is going to break it up. Warm (not hot!) olive oil can be used to provide temporary relief from earaches with no side effects. Just make sure the oil is clean. Drain and rinse the ear out after use.

To break up earwax, use use hydrogen peroxide or carboxle peroxide (available as Muro ear drops). These products are very cheap, have no side effects, and work well to dissolve wax. As above, drain and rinse the ear afterward, to completely remove the dissolved wax.

If you 're still checking your questions. The paramedic is correct.
You can get kits in a drug store that contain a bulb syringe to rinse out the ear wax and a small basin to catch the water.

not a doctor but have recently had ear problems

I used hydrogen peroxide to clean out my ear after swimming. Doctor said he could tell where it had started breaking things loose.

Stick to olive oil or almond oil. Almond oil is good for earache. Would not recommend household or car oil!
