An excellent notion, and not likely to ever happen, but still a good and generous thought by you.
Long ago, when Oil was discovered, Mankind also discovered another level of GREED, which grew exponentially, unfortunately.
Had anyone the forsesight then, to create Communal involvement in, and support for, oil extraction, refining, distribution, not only of the product, but any profits, we might live in a different world now.
Power is the food that nurtures the beast. Beast being the major companies who control the product. Politics interfered as well, once we in the USA discovered we had less than other areas of the world. That knowledge didn't stop us however, from becoming the largest users of the product, and so we pay.
To make an OIL COMPANY a "family" owned and operated business is a great idea. I applaud you for thinking so. The issue is way out of any families control at this point, unless you consider Saudi Arabia's control, BY FAMILY.
Even more to the point, and sadly so,,, WE, as the most powerful, and possibly power hungry nation on the planet, should have believed that it was not a never ending resource, and while we were developing more ways to use up petroleum, we should have been just as intensely, developing alternatives everyone could afford and live with.
In an analogy I offer a quote,,, By Albert Einstein. "I have no idea how we will fight the 2nd, or 3rd world war, but at some point we will fight "The NEXT, with sticks and stones."
I paraphrased that, but it alludes to the fact that one day, likely not in my lifetime, we may have to "go to town" by hitching the horse to the wagon.

First, oil companies are privately owned by investors. Secondly you have no idea of the great expenditures of money to drill a well or raise a marine platform. There are many blind (empty)wells, a tremendous amout of technology and professional workers involved. I work for an oil company in China and the amount of money per day that is spent to feed the employees, provide safe working conditions, training, helicopters, ships, recruiting new workers, pensions, health care, hospitals, schools, building new platforms, geological surveys and so on is vast. Take some time to look at the real work of an oil company and be grateful that oil is still pretty cheap.

USA govt. makes no profit from oil. Private companies do. These companies pay tax which is like sharing in a way.
Also, these companies are publicly owned so if you want to share in profit and loss you can but shares.
In Alaska, I believe the tax burden on the average state citizen has been reduced or eliminated. It was in the 70's. I don't know if it still is. That is a kind of sharing.

Are you insane? Are you trying to ruin the Bush families day? Are you trying to ruin the Texas Oil Cartel's week? My goodness, where do people come up with these things? The mineral rights are owned by the most powerful families in America and that will not change any time in the future. Share the wealth, hummph.

The US gov doesn't earn any profits from oil, the oil co's earn the profits. The money the gov gets from oil comes in the form of taxes from the sales of gas and from the oil co.'s BTW, the oil co's profit margin is 10% not bad but not great either.
