Perhaps because of rumours that Owen has a opt-out clause that will allow him to leave next summer, the supporters did not roar him on, but sat in silence, challenging him to make that first run on goal, a first trademark turn or burst of pace, to give a sign that the man in whom they had invested £17 million worth of dreams would prove as golden as the No 10 on the back of his shirt. To give a sign, most of all, that he was truly one of their own and not just another overpaid mercenary.
