Montreal is a great city to visit, the best way to do it is to walk/bus/subway/bike because traffic is a problem.
You can get around the city pretty easely speaking english, but you will hit a lot of people who don't speak word of it outside the downtown/old Port area. Most tourist place offers services/guides/tours/info in both languages(french and english).
Of course you have to visit the downtown/old port area wich have lots of 17-1800's buildings, but beware of the tourists shops traps.
In this area, you can go to the Pointe-a-Caliere anthropology museum located 350 Place Royale wich display a very interesting "debut of the colony" exhibit.
In the same area, you can walk along the Saint-Lauwrence River in the old port wich is a very busy tourist place with stores and attractions such as the museum of technology and Imax.
Don't miss the Bonsecours Market opened in 1847. The Market's neighbours include Montreal City Hall, the Château Ramezay Museum, the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Museum and the Sir Georges-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site.
The Notre-Dame Basilique is a must and is located at the Place-D'Armes, subway station of the same name.
You can spend the night in one of the numerous nightclubs or theatre of the Saint-Catherine or Saint-Laurent streets.
There is the Casino and La Ronde(theme park), a beach, the F1 circuit, great gardens around the Casino and what's left of 1967 World's Exhibit(some pavillions and others buildings) located on the beautiful Saint-Helene Island, subway station Parc Jean-Drapeau.
A good thing to do is to take a walk up the Mount-Royal(subway of the same name and bus 97 toward the mountain), wich is easy to spot from anywhere in the city. Go to both observatory toward downtown and east part of town. There is a lake on top and a historical site at the Cross. Of course, also located on the mountain is the Saint-Joseph Cathedral, not to miss.
Speaking of the east part, you cannot miss the Olympic Park, subway Station Pie-IX, witch include the Stadium and it's leaning tower, a unique attraction in the world. There, you also get to walk in the Biodome and the insectarium(where you can even taste them!!!) and the Botanic Garden.
In most restaurants, you have very good quality and generous portions, but I suggest you go on Saint-Denis street around Mount-Royal avenue. Typical Montreal meals include Poutine, smoked meat sandwichs and chicken(Saint-Hubert if you see one). For higher quality and non-typical, you just have to look around yourself has there is a lot of 3-4(and some 5) stars restaurants. Try the one on top of Place-Ville-Marie.
Miror is a good publication to find out about shows, concerts, festivals and various events to help you plan your trip. See link below.
Rent a car, get out of the city, go visit one of the National Parks like the one in Mauricie or in the Laurentides region. If you have time, visit the begining of America by going to the Old Town of Quebec City. You will not lose your time there.
I hope this helps you, and help you to have a good time.
P.S. You will not meet me there as I'm living on the west coast of Canada. But you will love this city. Do not go there in winter, it's too cold and traffics jams are even worse.

The former Olympic site; the botanical gardens; many beautiful churches (for the art and architecture). There are lots of great things to do and see in Montreal. I took a vacation there years ago and will never forget it.
