my pc contains 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD

this happened to me last week....my computer said that it was out of virtual memory (i still dont know what that is)...but it wouldnt reboot after that...i would just keep getting that same message...i ended up having to reinstall xp on my computer.....it took awhile to do this and i lost everything that was on the hard drive but now i have all the memory back and my computer is running better.......

Win2000 is a unstable operating system. I recomend u 2 change your operating system to WinXP Pro and 4 better results add more Ram and try changing your video card.

upgrading your Ram will benefit your overall system health but the best thing to do would be to reformat your hard drive and reinstall the OS if you are unable to upgrade.

Windows 2000 is not unstable and is better than its predecessors, Besides Windows XP, 2000 is just as good with downloads and plug ins that can be downloaded so that your system can function with XP tools (if necessary)

Upgrades can be expensive, but the price may drop as Vista approaches so keep and eye on the market.

The only time I've ever gotten this error repeatedly was when the hard drive was dying and it needed to be replaced.

The average lifespan of a hard drive is 3-5 years. If its older than that and still working you're just lucky.
