It is effectively an input plate and an output plate with a magnetic powder between them. When an magnetic field is applied, the powder forms a magnetic bond between the two plates, so transmitting power from the engine to the CVT unit. By varying the strength of the magnetic field the slip required for start-off can be generated.
The magnetic field is created by an electrical coil. This is the Clutch Coil.
