The private sector tends to pay more however the public sector tends to offer more holiday entitlement and benefits such as flexi-time. They also have schemes for assisted living where you buy a percentage of a property and the government owns the rest.
The reason for better standards is that public companies have to justify every penny they spend as they are ultimately spending the public's money. They have to adhere to European government laws and are subject to internal and external auditing. Any major abnomalies that show up in an audit are likely to be reported in the press and investigated further. Therefore, they have to be a lot more careful with their money. Private companies can spend their money as they wish and therefore are more likely to have better working conditions as they spend more money in this area to help motivate staff.

good q. civil service pay does go a long way and many are content with this standard. private sector is working from home and hopefully all are content/ i'd like to be my own boss right, but there are other industrious jobs that are worth well and pay civil service pay, but i've to admit that i can't see how the government is self-supporting, long-term, can anyone?

i worked in a government job, wages were better than some - but public services often quite low, as for private- standards can be better as a good organisation will put some profit back into staff care, also private depends on profit, so it pays them to look after staff.. i have worked for both, but have now changed to a charity, much less pay- but much more about people.. depends on the field you work in to be honest?
government jobs are often short term contract now, holidays are good, stress high
private has better wages-but holidays tend to be not as good..Ti's swings and round abouts

The private sector pays better, but has less security. But not a lot less. Gov't jobs used to be very secure, but that is changing. You do get more holidays, and there is usually less pressure.
