why do women drive big cars (i.e.volvo estates) which they then have great difficulty with in the car park?

Now you have got me started. I am a woman and I ask myself that question. My neighbour drives a big estate car and the back is full of dents and scrapes. She cannot parallel park at all. She has banged my car and my other neighbours car a few times. She doesnt even get out to see it the car is okay she just carries on. It infuriates me. If you cant park in a big car either dont park or get a smaller car.

Women do not in general want to be like men any more than men want to be like women. That is not the reason. Women want to be treated equally regardless of their gender.

A woman may require a large vehicle in order to carry her tools and ladder for DIY, pick up her children, do the shopping for her elderly relative, tow a caravan or trailer when she wants to go on holiday, take her bicycle to the country for a ride and many other reasons which are exactly the same reasons that men drive large vehicles.

Large vehicles without power steering are difficult to park in town whether you are male or female. It takes some skill. It doesn't take any innately male or female attribute though.

Personally I think that unless you have a good reason for owning a car, everyone should ride motorbikes and mopeds. They use less fuel and cause less congestion. You often see young, healthy people in a car on their own not carrying any luggage. What a waste! They could easily have travelled on a two wheeled vehicle and saved money, the environment and other people's time.

Ok.... heres the science bit... (LOL)
Guys are good at spacial awareness. In our primitive past, men had to be able to calculate how fast their quary, a deer for instance, was travelling, and when to throw his spear, AND where the deer was GOING to be when the spear reaches it. Its a complex spacial equation, but one that men are , genetically , more capable of performing. It manifests itself in modern day with things like kicking a football accurately, and parking a car.
Women, on the other hand are so much better at multi tasking than men. In their primitive past, woman had to look after the babies, cook and clean food, and listen out for predators all at the same time. This translates into modern days like this. They can answer the phone, keep their eyes on the kids, and perform a task all at the same time. Men cant do this. As an experiment, talk to a guy when he is watching the tv. He is incapable of concentrating on two things at once. True.
So in summary,
A guy can park a car better, because thats all he is thinking about at the time, and he has greater spacial awareness. Note. Nearly ALL men will turn the stereo down to park a car. Just watch them if you dont belive me! Cant think and listen at the same time.
A woman is not as capable spacially, but can park the car, fuss with the kids, think about what she will purchase and wonder how her freind feels today, ALL at the same time. The primitive brain is still so influencial in modern days.

I think this question applies to everyone really, not just women. You see so many people who can't handle the cars they have that it is really worrying. I think we should have to do a competency test before we are allowed to buy and drive a bigger car and that it should be on our licences.

Personally I have a smallish car (206) as I don't need anything bigger. I don't really enjoy driving my other halfs big car and am always worried about parking it so I go to the quiet end of the car park miles away from other cars!

I drive a rather large car because i need room for my dogs! I also need room for myself and partner when i give him a lift! Now i can see your point, some people find it hard to park and let there be no secret ... I'm one of them!!! Especially when other cars are parked anyhow, some of them using 1 and a/2 car park space, others across! etc ... So what i do is! Use spaces nobody likes because too much of a walk to make it from car to shops! I never attempt to get into any other spaces! I drive all the way to the back, then get enough space to reverse in my space to make it easier when i'm finished and want to drive home! Now not to be sexist ... I've seen as many male drivers park badly as women do! And the one thing that gets me groing ARGH!!!! Is people who get into their car, their shopping done, watch cars waiting to get into their space and simply ... Blether away, chat until they drop !!! Keeping others from parking and it's not a gender thing either! Men are as bad at it as women are!

oi lol, i drive a volvo v70 estate as i have 4 kids , but 3 living with me,im a damn good driver ive been told on many occasion and never have trouble parking my car no matter what.

not all woman are s...t drivers lol just some of them and its got nothing to do with the cars they drive its the person behind the wheel, as i must agree some of them shouldnt even be driving, its the old oaps no offence intended to anyone that are the worlds worst in this i personally think.

Because it's usually left to the women to do the shopping, be a taxi for the children, etc etc etc, and its not all women who have great difficulty parking... I've seen men that are worse at trying to park than most women I know.

I have a woman neighbor who backs into her driveway and inevitably can only open the door a few inches to get out while there is oodles of space in the passengers side and she lives alone. I have watched her get out the drivers side many times, its quite entertaining, and she drives a small car. I have also stopped trying to figure women out after I came accross the accronym meaning for woman.

Because women want to be like men. A big car is a big willy for them, the same as us.
