i wouldn't know because i got them pierced when i was like 1
i heard that around that age is a good time to get it done because the skin is thicker but not to thick to make it hurt
but back to the question...
i went with my cousin to get it done and when it was over she told me that it's like when you get a shot
there's pressure and the urge to scream but after a little while later it's fine

I do about 20 ear piercings a day, and I have mine done. Some say the reg part of your ear hurts more. It stings, but only for a few seconds, but It will hurt longer if you dont take proper care of it

I have the top portion of my ear pierced and it didn't hurt to get it done at all. It gets sore, very sensitive and it's impossible to sleep on that ear for a few days afterward, but it wears off and isn't bothersome at all. I think it looks pretty cool too.

Don't get it done with a gun, cause it hurts worse and causes a bump on the back of your ear, do it with a piercing needle. It is safer and healthier. Heals faster and hurts less too!!!

I think it stings more, because you are getting into the cartilage of the ear, versus the ear lobe which doesn't have cartilage. My mom said the higher up you get, the more it will hurt. But remember, it will only hurt until the pain goes away.

i did it- At first it stung a little, but what I remembered more was the throbbing-it gets blood red and THROBS! It gets very warm, and stings for about 15 minutes. Then it's just tender and sore for 1/2 a day.

Yes I have the tops of both my ears done. It's a throbbing sensation and it took longer to heal because I kept catching my comb in the earring.

If you do it yourself or get a friend to do it, just make sure you ice it well beforehand, it shouldnt hurt anymore than other parts of your ear. If getting it done professionally it shouldnt hurt at all. Dont forget to keep it clean and dont keep playing with it to minimise infection once its done.
(former punk who once had 11 in each ear, all done myself)
