Inductive logic, as opposed to deductive logic.

Deductive logic is used to arrive at logically true conclusions given true premises.

Inductive logic is used to arrive at logically true conclusions given premises WHICH ARE ONLY ASSUMED TO BE TRUE.

This is how Rush and the pundits on both sides of the issue - liberal AND conservative - fool their audiences. Because a conclusion reached by inductive logic seems logically valid (as in "common sense"), listeners don't bother to examine the truthfullness of the premise.

A pundit can state a premise which has not actually been verified, derive a logical conclusion from it, and seem to be making perfect sense.

The next time Rush or any other pundit (from BOTH sides) says something that seems to make perfect "common sense", take a close look at the premise. The more you do this, the more you'll be able to realize how someone who makes so much apparent sense can be later exposed as being full of contradictions.

How can someone so sensible be so contradictory at the same time? Because inductive logic allows sensible conclusions from unverified premises, that's why.

It's how a certain pundit, who was recently charged with obtaining illegal prescriptions to support a pharmecutical drug addiction, can use a "sensible" argument to advocate the jailing of all drug addicts - while himself beating the rap by negotiating with a Judge of the opposite political persuasion.

It's how pundits seemingly come up with an argument for anything, defying everyone's expectations of how they could possibly find the time to research the circumstances leading up to the argument. It's because they don't actually do the research. The premises used in inductive logic do not require such research; they only require acceptance based on the seemingly logical conclusions.

Finally, it's how pundits on both sides can "sensibly" advocate the jailing of all offenders of a certain type, while simultaneously reaching the "sensible" conclusion that the jails are overcrowded because the politicans of the opposing idealogy threw too many people in jail.

Conservatives, for example, want to throw many types of criminals (illegal drug addicts, aliens, etc) in jail but blame the liberals for the overcrowding of jails. Liberals want to lock up every conservative politician who has so much as a traffic ticket that was paid for by public funds, but blame the conservatives for the overcrowding of jails.

And of course, they all make "common sense."

Oh, and it helps for pundits to be "common man" entertainers, even though they're multimillionaires with tax breaks larger than the salaries of "common men".

I'm a libertarian, so a demagogue of either side doesn't always ring true with me. BUT - for as much as I disagree with his opinions, he comes across as an educated man. The true answer to your question is that he brings obstinant debating skills to the table. No one else can be right but him (most talk show hosts are like this, see).

Common sense and both sides of the story, thats what makes Rush seem conservative, he's really not, the liberals and demorats hate him for putting light on what they want to keep hidden from the public.
