according to me, it is not necessary that a leader, especially someone like mahatma gandhi, be always self-concious and aggressive. i have never known mahatma gandhi to be aggressive. if you give up all your anger and hatred and all those feelings, then you have to give up those feelings completely. was mahatma gandhi that self-concious and aggressive during his numerous hunger strikes? great people will think of others before themselves and that is why you cannot call them self-concious. talking about the little joys of life, what are the little joys of life to us? clean water, good food, good clothes, some facilities, etc. but to great people, all these are not the simple joys. to them these are much more than simple. ever attended an ncc or army camp? well, attend one for once, and you'll see that the simple joys are not the facilities that we can get, but all the fun you can squeeze out from whatever you do. the laughter, the smiles of friends, meeting new people, these are the 'simple' joys of life. what i mean to say is that different people have different views, and so what is a simple joy for you and me may be higher than expectations for a great person, like he leaders you speak of. so, leaders do not neccesarily have to be self-concious. aggressive or sacrificing little joys of life.

The experience of joy from life, or perhaps better stated as fulfillment, is a matter of perspective.
For example, if you were to ask someone who parties all the time, becoming quite intoxicated, if they think life would be worth living if they had to give up partying, they might answer that life is not worth living otherwise, as getting drunk brings them so much "joy". Particularly odd about that is that drugs and alcohol tend to numb the mind and senses. (Trust me, I know from what I speak).
However, there are many other aspects of life which are to be experienced from which joy can be obtained. Being a leader does not change who the person is. The person will either discover many of the true joys that life has to offer, or not.
I understand the perspectives, in general, from a man like Gandhi. He understands the joys that life has to offer, and can live to a high degree of fulfillment.
BTW, a true leader does not lead by being aggressive all the time. A true leader is someone who persuades those whom he leads. While some leaders may use strong arm tactics to get what they want, the results are usually short lived, and the person who obtained them that way, will usually feel it necessary to constantly be on guard to protect it. How joyful does that sound?
On the other hand, if you can persuade people to do what you ask of them because they truly believe in it, their conviction will be much higher.
Leading is not dictating.
Leading is presenting guidance.
The greatests joys do not come from superficial endeavors.

See it with A Different perspective. A leader who rises above his own selfish motives and making fortunes for himself and has to be conscious about the Humanity ( & not self-conscious), i.e. what you can contribute to a cause & not benefit from it. Just a Paradigm Shift and U r a true leader (Its a different matter, initially they will neglect, but perseverence to an Idea, will bear fruit and U will become what GOD has sent you to be.

you sacrifice some and adopt many.
Do you think Gandhi was not enjoying?
Huh! He even enjoyed not wearing enough clothes.
He didn't sacrifice sex for his dying parent.
It's just that you do & portray yourself. You need to be a diplomat to be different - a leader.
Justify all that you do also those that you don't in a manner to appear great/scrificing... If u can do that you can be a leader

yes. being a person like gandhi means sacrificing , quite a lot. we know from his autobiography that he even refused gifts given to him and donated them to the needy, inspite of his wife's protests.it is his sacrifice that brought us freedom, isnt it?
