What proportions are Powerpoint slides?

Im aiming to produce a master background which will sit as a canvas in powerpoint and would like to know the size of the page.
Im guessing it is around 800x600 @ 72ppi?

You guess correctly.
I've been told that you can make widescreen slides, but I've never actually seen it done.
