I found a great gift was giving a one or two year subscription to Parenting magazine. It has a lot of helpful hints for moms to be, babies and children. I've always been told by my friends that it was great because it gave them a lot of support and some good ideas. One of my friends said after the first 2 months she couldn't wait to get her next issue. This is just an idea, but you might want to check with your friend and see what she needs and wants.

Don't get the nail clippers or small items like that. I have 10 pairs of nail clippers from my two showers! The best gifts are diapers (or a diaper service if she'll be going with cloth), wipes, baby laundry detergent. Or you can do the Mommy package (she might be embarrassed to open it but it's a life saver) that includes: a variety of pads, Tucks, hemorrhoid cream, analgesic spray (for any stitches/tears), nipple cream (if nursing), Tylenol, any Mustela body product (you can find at Sephora).
Don't buy any talc powders for baby, liquid powders work great for babies when the weather gets HOT, but nothing loose & dusty. I'd watch all the scented products, the baby my have extremely sensitive skin. Stick with Aveeno to be safe.

It would be nice if you would put together a small gift pack for her and one for the baby... one for her after labor, such as maybe a nursing gown if she is nursing, some Tucks, and nursing pads.. and maybe some chocolate or snack food she likes... you can also give her the book "What to expect in the first year" (no one thinks of that, and I def reccommend this book) and for the baby, get him one of those baby's first year calendars, write on the inside who it's from... maybe a baby picture frame.. for my step-daughter, I bought a small basket.. filled it with things I iddn't think she would get at the shower - Motrin, huggies disposible washcloths, burp cloths, teether etc... stuff he would use later on too... another idea is the medicine (no one buys the meds cuz they are so expensive) case at Walmart or the bathtub they have now... I provided link sto see them...
I also made a diaper wreathe for my sister in law that she loved and kept..
Have fun spoiling them both!

I always buy the stuff like baby lotion, baby wash, powder and diaper ointment. She will be needing that all the time, too. I also find that getting some of that nice smelling antibacterial hand sanitizer is always a good gift and is something you need when bringing home a new baby.
Also, you need to get something that's purely for the mom, like a cool candle or her fave body wash. Nobody hardly ever thinks of the moms at baby showers, and it makes them feel extra special.

My favorite gift right now is a book called Baby Gami (the art of wrapping a baby in a blanket) and of course and new blanket for mom to use the book with. I has great Ann Geddes type pictures and what to do in emergency situations. My fav is the brown paper bag wrap when your out of diapers and clothes and on the go.

I don't know how much you want to spend, but here are some ideas.
Digital camera
Memory Cards (if she already has a camera)
Scrapbook
Family Heritage Photo Album
Embroidered Blanket with Baby's Name
Nursing gown with matching sleeper for baby
Gift certificate to Day Spa
Fruit basket with all her favorites
Hands-on Gifts
Offer to help paint/decorate the nursery
Offer to cook meals for her freezer so she can rest after delivery
Offer to plant a tree in their yard in honor of the baby.
Offer to do her hair/makeup at the hospital
There is no limit on the possibilities. Be creative!

For my baby shower, I received a unique, silver baby rattle. It had a real soft ringing sound to it. It was my favorite shower gift. Granted my two month old is still too young for rattles, but I know he'll love it when he gets old enough.
Also, burp cloths are good. You'll need TONS of those. I keep running out. And the flannel receiving blankets. You can never have enough of those. Baby wipes too. Everyone thinks of diapers, but no one thinks of wipes. :o) Good luck and have fun!

Buy clothes (but 6 months...so they can wear them longer) buy socks...shoes...there is a ton of baby clothers to buy. You can buy memory books...or baby chew toys. Just go to a baby store or dept in a store...there are plenty of things to buy a new mother. Even look at a diaper bag...wipes...bum cream..face cloths...clothes...socks...baby shoes...sheets for the crib. Give some money to start a bank account.
