So I'm not a guy but can I still answer? Eyeliner doesn't have to be heavy and dark. One makeup technique that I love is to use a THIN brush to apply eyeshadow as your eyeliner. Works well on the lower lashline. I use Vintage Gold from Mary Kay and I get compliments all the time. It's not as harsh as eyeliner but yet still defines the eye, which is the whole point:)

what about when it smears a little and she looks dead? I hate eyeliner for that reason, it always makes me look like I have dark circles underneath my eyes!....
I don't think it's neccesary. Maybe only for the dramatic look.

Yes it is very essential, even with lines I could not see her, without line, Oh God help me.
