if you take his sunglasses away from him in CSI Miami he really wouldn't know what to do. I love the way he talks to people by turning his head away from them at 90 degree angles before turning round to look at them - as he puts his sunglasses on. Very funny.

David Caruso is a one dimensional actor. He made the "big time" on the hit show NYPD Blue and thought he was a good actor, which led to Caruso quitting the TV show to pursue a film career. After several flops in film, he returned to TV in typecast for CSI Miami, which was the 3rd spinoff of the original (set in Vegas). All you have to do is close your eyes when watching CSI Miami and it will bring you back to NYPD Blue. He has same gestures, same gravelly voice, and same wannabe Columbo style of questioning.

An interesting note is that Caruso started in films and played the geeky wimp. See "Rambo" and "An Officer and a Gentleman."

He's a great actor on television--I loved him on NYPD Blue, and I watch CSI Miami because of him. He made several movies that didn't do very well, but I think he now realizes that he should stay with the small screen.

He does occasionally subscribe to the Joey Tribbiani "fart-sniffing" school of acting. (Worst example: "Jade", his attempt at a breakout Hollywood picture).

But it really does suit Horatio Caine as a man with a lot on his mind, even if it comes across as constipation sometimes. And besides, with some of the sharpest scripts in the business and a talented support cast, he can't really go too far off beam.

I like him in CSI Miami and I liked him in Proof of Life and he was funny in Hudson Hawk. I think it depends on the character that he plays....he was ok in Jade , too.
