I mean, if you are talking to somebody on AIM and they don't know your email or anything like that, could they hack your computer? Could they send you a virus. Or do any kind of harm. And I don't mean your average friend, more like a computer whiz who you think has done something to it already, but you are not sure. Is there any way I can find out for sure?

Talking on aim, yes, because in that time there is a connection between you computer and theirs, through the aim servers, which are oh-so secure, for being a free service. There are a number of different ways to send you something malicious at that point. They could send you a file that they tell you is something else, and it is really a self-executing maliscious batch script, or a trojan, or a virus.

Bottom line, no system, unless off, is 100% secure. The amount of security that can be hacked is directly proportionate to the amount of resources (cash for hardware, software, knowledge) a would-be hacker has at their disposal. If they have unlimited resources, and they WANT to hack you, you will be hacked. That is, as I said, unless your computer is off. If your local router is off all the better. If your PC is not physically connected to the internet, or any network, that is as good, but technically it is not 100% secure because someone could break into your home and use it...

Nobody can "hack" you over AIM.
Just don't download any files from them if you are not sure what it is.

They can not damage your computer at all unless you somehow purposefully download a virus from them.

If you are using a messenger type service its highly doubtfull they would be able to hack your system.

I would suggest you have a good firewall, antivirus and be alert for stupid pop up ad's, however

yes, someone can "hack" you if you communicate via aim, however, it is likely that they are mear script kiddies, and the virus and/or attacks are easily avoided or fixed.
