I think that the UN agreed to the formation of the state of Israel in 1948 because of two factors:
1- the "west" still felt it had a right to colonise other parts of the world.
2- there was a feeling of guilt in Euro/Western society about the terrible atrocities that were perpetrated to people during WWII, including Gypsies, homosexuals, and a host of other people, and especially, Jews.
The result is also two-fold in that:
1- the Palestinians were marginalised in their own country.
2- opposition to Zionism is equated with anti-Jewish sentiments (anti-Semitism).
The future, however, does not lie in only looking at the past. Otherwise we will continue to see the revenge attacks from both sides. Palestinians should be allowed to live in all of Palestine/Israel as should Israelis.
There is much talk of a two-state solution, but if you have two sectarian states (an Islamic Republic and a Hebraic Republic) living side by side each believing in their own divine right to the entire area, then a solution will be very slow in coming. It will have to wait until each side has become convinced that they cannot use brute force to impose their will.
In a way George Bush is right. If all outside parties were to stop arming the different sides, then eventually they would have to talk to each other. We can only earnestly await the US's announcement to stop arming Israel as a measure of goodwill which could then be followed by a matching pledge by Iran, etc.
Eventually, stable secular societies are our best hope, as is the UN, if only they were given the support required.

Don't believe everything you see on youtube. Besides, Palestinian and Lebanese people are also at fault, they're not completely innocent. There has been conflict between Jews, Christians and Muslims, in this area for thousands of years. Everyone has a right to be there, hopefully one day they'll all figure out how to live together in peace. Today doesn't look good, tomorrow either. Maybe next year...?

Um....you are trying to rewrite history. No one feels sympathy for a people who tie bombs to their children in the name of Allah. No one has compassion for a village that hides Hezbos in their homes. No one believes in the Palestinian Nation because they didn't exist until Israel became a state, by virtue of the United Nations and the Bible, and the surrounding Arabic nations refused to allow immigration of those Jordanias, Lebenese, etc who were currently within the borders of modern-day Israel. There is no such thing as a Palestinian. Further, how can you expect the world to even consider these peoples when they have sworn an oath to cast Israel and every Jew into the sea. Get real and stop spreading propaganda.
