I agree that apathy is the opposite of love, not hate. Hate is a very strong emotion, and we only get that worked up over things we really care about. It's not caring about something at all, or apathy, that truly opposes love.

No. If you ask someone what is the opposite of hate, they will likely say love. If you ask someone the opposite of love, they will likely say hate.

If you ask someone the opposite of apathy, they will not say love, they will say something like interest. Plus, while love is a positive emotion, apathy is not exactly negative, it's more or less neutral.
