I had planned to stay with friends in Patmos for a week in August. They have changed plans and now I am stuck with my flight to Athens with no idea on what to do ( departure August 9th).
I'd like to go to a quiet island. I have found no accomodation in Patmos at this time.Possibly a rustic place with as little tourist attractions as possible. Thanks for any help you can give me!

If you're looking for a quiet island, I recommend the island of Andros. It has been a couple years since I've been there, but if I remember correctly it is a two hour ferry ride from Rafina. I would recommend staying in the town of Batsi - it has a very nice beach, couple of restaurants, and I think only one or two clubs. The people are extremely nice and the landscape is beautiful. If you're able to travel around the island (there are places to rent scooters), there are many beaches, archaeological site, waterfalls, etc. to be seen.

Below are a couple of links that should help you out:

This is the hardest time to find accomodation. Try Sifnos, Serifos, Naxos, Syros, Spetses, Poros. Lovely places, quite calm, with good transport. Aegina is near Athens and has a boat every hour, but accomodation is the hard part. There are many sites on the net, hotels.gr, etc.
Kythira and Milos are lovely too, but you'll need a car.

If you are looking for a quiet, non-touristy island near Athens (though Athens is fantastic--try staying for awhile), try Hydra , Spetses or Aegistri. You can get a ferry to any of them from the port of Piraeus. Hydra is touristy, but there are no cars allowed. Often when you arrive at a Greek island, there are people waiting there to offer you a room in their home. Try it!

Try the islands of the saronic gulf (Poros, Ydra, Aigina, Spetses) they are not far from Peiraius port, they are quite pitorresque with nices beaches, and each one has a caracteristic, to visit, p.ex in Ydra and Spetses cars are not allowed, so you could make long walks in the port, use a donkee!, yes they are many in the port, or use the public bus. Anything you decide have a nice trip!.

From Athens you can fly onto Corfu or Crete... they're the main tourist places... Contact a company called odyssey travel who specialise in Greek holidays (British company) they may help?
