Maybe it would help if you wrote up all of your research and presented it to your mother, along with a book on rats as pets (preferably one with pictures where they appear domesticated and cute). Most people who are unfamiliar with the practice of keeping rats as pets think of them only as ugly disease-carrying vermin, so you need to both show her that you're responsible enough for a pet and that they are normal, accepted pets now. If she's an internet user, you can also point her to rat sites and communities where she can see that it's not "weird" to have a pet rat.

Ask your mom when she is in a good mood. Tell what is on the question, you know except the my mom said no part. But yeah, tell har that rats also have been known to learn their name and do tricks. They are very smart to make up for the tail. You know what, you could teach the rat tricks and such to make money. ( do a show)Your mom probaly doesn't like the tail and think that they are probaly dirty for their( the rat's) reputation for living in a sewer.

Do any of your friends have rats she could visit with? My mom wasn't happy with the idea but about 2 hrs. after I got my first rat she fell in love! They are the most personable, cutest, sweetest little things. I think they are like mini dogs.

Give her time to get used to the idea.

Take her to a pet store and take her by the rats. Ask to handle one. She might warm up to the idea.

I just purchased a rat myself, and they're truly amazing creatures. Clean, sweet, and smarter than dogs. :)

Those are all great answers, I'd add asking her to make a deal with you. You know, ask what would you have to do for her to say yes, or offering something, (better grades, or whatever.) Rats are great pets. =)

Take her to the pet store and let her hold one! If you were my child, I'd say YES!!! I love rats!
They are smart, affectionate, and are easy to take care of!
