Disc is always better than drum. They offer good braking, less wear and good braking even in wet conditions.

It is better to use the front brake if just slowing for a corner or traffic (as long as you are traveling in a straight line) the front discs generally have the lions share of the stopping duties, as long as the bike was designed that way. If you have crappy front brakes then a 60 % front to 40 % rear ratio will best slow you down.
My friend has a 50's era Harley with no front brake, how he gets it stopped is a wonder to witness.

You should use both brakes when stopping, especially with a passenger.

My Harley has disc on front and rear.

disc braks always have better breaking easier replacement or pads and better feel at the lever/pedal
