I went and saw stormbreaker. It was fab one thing though I dont believe the uncle (Ian rider is dead) my reasons are:
1. The bad guy only fired 2 shots directly at Ian riders head which would have killed him instantly why were there so many bullets in the car door then.
2. No one actually saw the body.
3. There was no blood in the car the entry wound from the shots would have caused some splatter.
4. If he was killed why isnt the car a write off it was fairly undamaged if he had died then he would have no control over the car which at the speed he was driving would have left the road and probably done some serious damage before stopping.
5. the gun shots in the door look staged and were below the angle of the killer hanging from a helicopter.
6. it seems more likely that the entire thing was staged the car looks like it was stopped then a automatic weapon fired into the side.
7. why would the guy who killed the uncle then save the uncles nephew is it the uncle in desguise?

I took my nephew to see it the other day, I thought it was very good, glad it didnt go down the A-team route and have lots of guns but nobody getting shot.

As far as his uncle goes, I dont know, my nephew has read all the books, I'm sure he would have told me if the uncle wasnt dead, and that assasin crops up in a later book with the job of killing Alex (remember at the end of the film he said he had no instructions as far as Alex was concerned)

The only thing I found a bit silly was the fact that he appeared to be a good 4 or 5 years older than everyone in his class and certainly seemed a lot older than the 14 he was supposed to be!

Otherwise I thought it was a great film!

I saw the film and thought i was good, a bit comical at times but then again it is a kids film, although I do agree Rider looked about 17 when all the kids in the assembly, at the start of the film, looked 14.

Anyway, I think, from all you have said, that perhaps Ian Rider isn't dead, but then you have the question why would he put his nephew through all this spy stuff that he doesn't really want to do - unless of course he is incapacitated by the bad guys....
But also children's books (i haven't read any of the Alex Rider books) tend to take away parent figures (mainly I'm basing the argument on my small knowledge of Harry Potter ) so the children have to learn to grow up by themselves, with no one really to guide them, and to bring back the parent figure would some how ruin the story (wow how unsympathetic do I sound) as the child has learnt to stand by themselves - and plus do the whole revenge thing trying to get back at the bad guys....
