The American Dream is a term to describe the ideology that anyone can achieve happiness if they work hard enough; this is generally applied to materialism: the idea that any person can become rich if they are brave, intelligent, daring (etc.) enough. Historically, the idea of the American Dream diminished during the Great Depression, as people began to realise that outside factors affected your chances - you had to be lucky to get rich.

Consumption. The United States consumes over 40% of the global resources. The 'American Dream' seems to be a lifestyle of massive consumption. Drive a bigger car than the rest of the world, live in a bigger house, eat bigger meals, and make a whole lot bigger piles of garbage. The 'American Dream' is living a lifestyle of excess which in turn creates excessive waste. If the rest of the world were living the same as the people of the United States this world would not be able to sustain us for very long as the resources would be fast depleted. China and India are coming up in the world and many there like the American lifestyle as far as the mass consumption goes. If everyone in China starts driving a car as in the U.S., that alone will create a huge mess to global air quality. The American lifestyle is a blessed one that will surly kill us all. In the past, 50's-80's and maybe somewhat today, the 'American Dream' seemed to evoke an image of motivated immigrants coming to America, 'the land of opportunity' and creating a wonderful life for themselves through entrepreneurship. Now as the U.S. becomes more immigrant unfriendly it just looks more like a place for over consumption and rampant paranoia.
