Insomnia can be caused by many different, and also serious deceases, not only by stress.
Otherwise have a warm shower, or just wash your face with warm water. If you can not sleep, relax. Do not try feverish to fall in sleep, do not become nervous that you'll be tired next day, if you won't sleep now! Try to think something neutral, separate your self from your daily problems. Even without sleeping, give your body the rest it needs..
In the evening, do not take food or tea, have a short(or long) walk, air the room before you go to bed. Tell yourself that you were diligent today, and now you deserve to rest.
I would suggest to have a check up by a doctor. If you wake up in the night permanently, at the same time, you have for sure health trouble.
Also herbs are not good on a long term, to handle insomnia. You should find out what it is, that doesn't let you sleep. Maybe it is a natural process of aging.

Well, it looks like a few people gave you some excellent tips and I don't think I can top them for common sense and strategic suggestions on what to do and how to do it to fall asleep at night. I just have one very teensy addition. I do feel your pain and I have said many times that sleep and me do not mesh well. I have had many problems falling asleep in my past and I am still a very light sleeper. But what works for me, and this is easy to do and free, is I pray. I am not a zealot, I do not go to church but I do pray and I am telling you it never fails. If I am very anxious then I will specifically ask for help with relieving the stress but usually, just going through my prayers, and they take a long time to finish, will completely conk me out. Since I have been doing this, about 2 years now, I have not had 1 night of insomnia. It is just a suggestion for you, and I wish you luck. It is horrible not to be able to fall asleep.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Well..its 3:40 am here..so obviously I'm no expert..I take a warm shower then read...my husband is snoring right now btw lol
I read an article once on self relaxation. You start by concentrating on the top of your head...then slowly work your way down, ears, mouth, chin, neck, shoulders, ect...concentrating only on the one particualr area at a time (for a few seconds)..it said you can just think of that part, or imagine you're getting a slow massage in the area...I feel tingles as I concentrate and it does work..usually I'm asleep by my belly button lol...good luck to you :)

high energy exercise for at least 45 mins (long run, lifting weights, hot yoga, etc...), a hot shower and a good book always does the trick for me.

i've always had the mind that races the second i get into bed -- i have to be exhausted and thinking about something outside of life worries to fall asleep.
