India is... Do we Americans really believe that we have the most freedom? I just got an email that blasted me and told me to go to Russia and try to "talk like that" ... duh hello? .. Eastern Europe has been in the middle of a pseudo democratization for 17 years now.. there press is arguably less regulated than our own.. when the elections in the Ukraine came under suspicion the people came out by the hundreds of thousands and stopped the country cold until there was recount.. had we done that here there might be a very different discussion going on ?

I realize we are a federal republic.. but that finer point escapes the average "Americans" education.. and not accidentally. Also we call it America monopolistically ..it's part of our naturally ingrained arrogance. The United States sounds so untidy.. where "AMERICA" is a brand that anyone could be proud of..
even if we don't know what it means.

You seem proud of your knee-jerk dismissal of any positive "spin" regarding you own country. How can you be so easily mislead by the self aggrandizement of other nations?

India is a densely populated country that claims to be a democracy . . . So what?

If it were true, the ruling caste would have quite a fight on their hands, politically.

I suppose true freedom is having the option of dousing your wife in gasoline and burning her to death when she displeases you? Perhaps true freedom is a teenage girl forced into bed with some wealthy, pedophile "husband" she's never met? How inspiring.

We are the envy of the world. You obviously feel ashamed of that, but denial is not the way to reconcile your guilt. Lowering your own country does nothing to raise India or the Ukraine, it just lowers you.

Free speach is a powerful tool & most governments try to suppress the same. True India is the largest democracy & perhaps the best embodiment of all the virtues of democracy. I am proud to be an Indian, but my patriotism doesn't blind my judgement. In 1995 the Chief minister of Tamil Nadu (a large State in India), Ms Jaya lalitha, banned the press & she was duely criticized for her action. The reasons were simple; the press was publicizing her misdeeds. The ban was lifted, although it did mar the reputation of the State.

Communist blocs on the other hand are much worse. Free speach is ever more restricted. The only difference is of degree & not of kind.

Do you understand what they meant as largest Democracy, population. But India is a parliamentary republic while we are a presidential republic. Apples and Oranges my friend, plus women of India have almost no say in anything especially marriage, millions of female babies are aborted each year, clearly India is more free.
bum bum bum bum buuuuuuuuuuuuuuum

Inky, Russia still has a Communist party that can be voted into office, so to an extent they still cling a bit to Communism.

The USA is a police state, don't you know? You don't have any freedom, just an illusion of it! Plus stop calling it America. America signifies South and North America taken together, not your country... Why do you think that the USA should be called America??? With the same logic Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, etc can call themselves America!

Rock on Rock! Good point in the asking of this question. Seems that everyday we hear something on the news that makes me wonder if all the stuff we were taught in school was history or mythology. I sure don't feel as free today as I did 20 years ago. Heck, forget 20 - try 6 years ago.

America doesn't have to be the largest, it is the best democracy in the world. What country do you consider the largest? Red Communist China? I hope not, they are hardly democratic. Maybe India..... probably the largest, but not the best.

America's not even a democracy...it's a Constitution-based Federal Republic.

I'm glad to see other countries are taking (or have taken) the right steps for basic human rights.

Yes, India is... But don't forget that it is MOST CORRUPT country too, which will erode all the good value... and apart of that most of the Indian population is poor (look at country per capita income) and vast coutry land is underdeveloped, which makes DEMOCRACY meaningless which you are claiming....

If I ask you... YOU NEED FOOD or DEMOCRACY to any poor Indians?

You will get the ... asnwer what I mean....

People just want to cling onto the old grandeur of America, and they don't want to let it go... the Land of the Free.... the Promised Land... yeah right.

People also seem to think Russia is still a Communist country.
