If you're a good listener and your friend likes to talk, just let them do the majority of the talking.

If like to talk and your friend is a good listener, then do the majority of the talking yourself.

If you're both talkers or you're both listeners or you are unsure, then begin by asking generalized questions like, "What have you been up to?" Then, try to pick out something from your friend's answers that you still have in common and can continue talking about. If nothing like that ever gets mentioned, then just give up the struggle and end the conversation.
